Join the residents of the Winnetka Heights Historic District as we open our doors to the community as part of the upcoming Winnetka Heights Holiday Home Tour, December 7th, from noon to 6 p.m.

In 1981 the City of Dallas recognized Winnetka Heights as the city's sixth historic district. The neighborhood was the first such area in Oak Cliff to be designated. Two years later, the National Register of Historic Places also recognized the district, citing its significant contribution to the city's architecture, community planning and development.

The Winnetka Heights Home Tour is an important event for the entire North Oak Cliff community, as it showcases beautifully how the old and the new cannot only coexist, but can in fact thrive. As our neighborhoods juggle both the growing pains and benefits of development, this tour showcases that it's the people who live in our historic neighborhoods that truly make them what they are today. We are defined by more than a proximity to the urban center and the amenities that it brings. We choose to be neighbors to one another and to be part of a community that respects the past but looks to the future and works to make it our own.

Advance tickets for the tour will be available on this site. Tickets on the day of the tour will be priced slightly higher and may be purchased at Turner House, 401 N. Rosemont Avenue.

All pre-sale tickets will be available at Will Call at Turner House the day of the tour.DSC06138

Built around 1912, this home's history was clear to the new homeowners in the first week. Neighbors stopped by to share their own family's history in the home, and more recently, a former resident's family relived memories touring the house. The new residents learned about Winnetka Heights when they moved from the Houston Heights neighborhood to be near their daughter in Kessler Park. Looking for a similar vibe to their Houston neighborhood, their daughter saw the house was being renovated and asked if it was available. Prior to renovations, the house had seen a period of neglect resulting in the loss of the porch and a rear carriage building. The new owners were able to salvage lovely doors and windows from the carriage building and use elsewhere in renovations. This complete renovation by River Oak Renovations went down to the shiplap. The downstairs has been reconfigured to accommodate family gatherings but maintaining some of the original features, such as the fireplace, front room soffits, and beautiful windows. Doors from the back shed were leveraged on the second story porch, and additions to the home were made to accommodate the master bath and bedroom. The additional space and reconfiguration accommodate the new owner's children and grandchildren. With a pool and poolhouse added, this home is ready for many friends and family to come!

This 1925 home was originally built as a duplex. A developer purchased the duplex, and renovated the home keeping the original floors and two entrance doors. The current owners moved to the neighborhood in October of 2018. The tree lined streets, historic homes, and charm of Winnetka Heights made these homeowners feel at home. After meeting neighbors at their first neighborhood association event, the homeowners knew they had made the right choice. Their passion for travel can be seen throughout the house. Pillow covers in the office and candles in the bathroom are from Bali. A rosary from the Vatican hangs above the bedroom door. There is a tiled lizard from Barcelona, and a large rubbing piece from Cambodia. Many of the small pieces in the home have a story or an adventure attached to them. The homeowner's aunt is an artist who painted the tiles located in the guest bedroom.

These homeowners purchased their house in January of 2018 after having attended a Winnetka Heights events with a former co-worker for several years. When they became empty nesters, they decided to move from North Dallas, and Winnetka Heights was the obvious choice. This home was originally built in 1912, and the homeowners received a book that belonged to the second owner of the house with the date December 1, 1920 inscribed on the inside cover. Interior renovations and design were done by Orchid Interiors, and Triple J Construction provided renovations and updates to the outside of the house. One of the couple's favorite renovations is the wine cellar. When they first put a contract on the house, they did not know there was a partial basement accessible through a coal chute in the front driveway. After shimmying down the coal chute, they found the original coal furnace still in the basement. Now part of the house again, the basement has become their wine cellar with a secret speakeasy entrance. The dining room has an art collection from Mike Savage, an artist from Kansas City, including two portraits of their past dogs, Rex, Deuce and Lily. The living room has a collection from Dahlia Woods, a local Dallas artist who the couple met through Make-A-Wish, and whose art hangs in Dallas City Hall, among other places.

When the homeowners walked into the house a year ago, it immediately felt like home. They continued to revisit the house at every opportunity and took time to walk around the neighborhood. The tree lined streets, charming porches, and greetings from passersby made them feel welcome. Now, a year in, they are proud to be part of this storied and celebrated community. Originally built in 1912, this single family home was passed down through generations until purchased by the current owners. The couple has enjoyed learning about the home's history through their neighbor whose extended family once lived here. Most interestingly, the home survived the 1957 tornado, which ripped off the roof and the entire porch while completely destroying the back house. The owners purchased the home after it underwent extensive renovations from its attic to foundation. Both bathrooms were redone and the kitchen was completely updated, but much remains original – like the doors, door knobs, fireplace and more. Since owning it, the family has repaved the walkway and added pillars to front porch to punch up the character and frame the home nicely. What's next on their list to tackle? The backyard! When exploring their new home, the couple went to the second story of their backyard barn to scope out what was up there. To their surprise, they found many handmade antique pieces, including a small table, many wooden boxes and two chests. The chests were refurbished and are now used for functional storage throughout the house.

Originally looking at houses in Kessler Park, these homeowners kept being drawn to photos of this house online. They quickly called their agent, and scheduled a viewing right away. As soon as they entered the house, they knew it was home. They immediately made an offer, which to their delight was accepted. In April of 2013, they made Winnetka Heights and this South WInnetka house their home. Estimated to have been built in 1915, this house has had some minimal work done, like replacing painting and replacing siding on the exterior of the house. The front porch and back porch were rebuilt after years of use. The yard has been professionally landscaped and sprinklers help maintain it. The interior decorations reflect what makes the homeowners' smile. Most of the paintings in the house were done by Ginger Fox, a local artist. Family photos line the staircase including pictures of family dogs.

Recently remodeled, this home was originally built in the 1920s. After pressure from family and friends, this homeowner started looking for a home in Winnetka Heights. They purchased the house while it was being remodeled by River Oak Renovations. The renovations were extensive including a new kitchen addition, additional bathroom, back patio, increased closet space (much needed for the homeowner's needs), new plumbing and electric. A large painting in the dining room is the first painting from the homeowner's Great Grandmother. "She didn't want anyone to know she was learning and hid it under her bed when she was not working on it…not thinking that the random paint spots on her comforter would be a giveaway." Two large paintings in the living room are by Marianne Angeli Rodriguez, an artist out of Louisiana, who the homeowner met at a Dallas art show. She was "just as joyful in person as her paintings are." The painting in the hallway of a woman's profile is by Ashley Longshore who the homeowner has followed for years and is now the resident artist at Bergdorf Goodman.

Winnetka Heights has over 600 homes within its boundaries, a large percentage which are owner-occupied. Each year selected residents willingly open up their homes to the public, showcasing what a treasure we have in our community.

About Winnetka Heights

Advertised as "Dallas' Ideal Suburb" by the Russell Realty Company in 1911, Winnetka Heights stands today as Dallas' best example of preserved, intact tum-of-the-century housing.

Originally included in the Midway Addition to the city of Oak Cliff in 1890, it was replatted as Winnetka Heights in 1908. Four prominent businessmen – L.A. Stemmons, TS. Miller, Jr., J.P. Blake, and R.S. Waldron developed the 50 square-block area as a prestigious suburb. Sales were brisk, with several millionaires building opulent Prairie-style homes in the first wave of construction. All four of the developers built their homes here, but only the J.P. Blake home at 401 North Rosemont (home of the Oak Cliff Society for the Fine Arts), and the TS. Miller home at 101 North Montclair remain today. Wonderful examples of Arts and Crafts/Prairie architecture, they stand as a bye-gone reminder of these first families and their lifestyles. As time went by, lots were subdivided to allow for the construction of bungalows and cottages. Each home, be it two-story Prairie or bungalow, was constructed with the finest materials and craftsmanship throughout. All the houses had distinctive exteriors and rich details inside.

The end of World War II ushered in Winnetka's decline, as demand for housing forced many of the grand old homes to be cut up into apartments. Urban blight took its toll through the 1960s until young homeowners began buying and restoring these homes. Attracted to the extraordinary old architecture, low prices and in-town convenience, they sought to restore the area while seeking protective zoning as an historic district. The first Oak Cliff neighborhood to be rezoned, the Winnetka Heights Historic District was created by the city of Dallas in 1981. Projects of the Winnetka Heights Neighborhood Association have included park and street beautification, installation of historic street lamps, code enforcement, and Christmas Candlelight home tours.

The association is dedicated to the preservation of this area as an enduring symbol of early 20th century life, while ensuring Winnetka Heights remains the most vibrant historic district in the city.
